Sechelt Reef Road reopened

The road has been opened as of 3:20 p.m.

Update 3:20 p.m.

Reef Road is reopened, according to District of Sechelt. "Please slow down and follow all construction signage and crews as we complete the work," said the notice. "Thank you for your patience and to the contractors for assessing and fixing the issue so quickly."

Original story

While the road may not be open yet, the cause of Sechelt's Reef Road washout has been determined.

On Jan. 31., Lindsay Vickers, Sechelt communications manager said in an email that the washout appears to be caused by a log that was swept down the creek and got lodged in the culvert, blocking the flow of water.

Vickers said that the crews have removed the log and are now rebuilding the road.

“Crews are working really hard and are optimistic to have at least one lane open this week,” she said.

In the meantime, traffic heading to Kinnikinnick Elementary, Sechelt Arena, Blue Ocean Golf Course, Fairway, Lookout, Gale and The Shores is being re-routed through West Sechelt.

Reef Road was closed Monday, Jan. 29, as a series of atmospheric rivers brought heavy rains to the region.
