Programs available for youth

The Rotary Club of Gibsons and Rotary District 5040 are providing opportunities for youth to participate in two events that take place March 16 to 19 and April 30 to May 3. All expenses will be paid by the Rotary Club.

All expenses will be paid by the Rotary Club. These opportunities are available to all Coast residents.

The RYLA South, Rotary Youth Leadership Award is March 16 to 19, at Camp Jubilee, North Vancouver. Interested parties can submit in writing a 200 to 500-word essay, "The importance of attending RYLA South" and return the completed forms to Rotarians by Feb. 24.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive training program for community youth leaders. Young people (age 16 to 18) chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid seminar, camp or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to hone those skills through practice.

Its purpose is to demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth, provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders, encourage leadership of youth by youth and recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.

Adventure in citizenship is April 30 to May 3 in Ottawa, presented by the Rotary Club of Ottawa with 220 students across Canada. Interested parties can submit in writing a 200 to 500-word essay "The importance of attending Rotary Adventure in Citizenship" and return the completed forms to Rotarians by Feb. 24.

Candidates must be attending Grade 10 to 12 and be maintaining acceptable grade standards, aged 16 to 19 and a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.

The program consists of air travel to Ottawa and billeting in Rotarians' families, to learn what it means to be a Canadian and how our government works, gain an understanding of our country and meet the leaders, the decision makers and other young Canadians.
