A civic leadership program is being offered through Eldercollege at the Sunshine Coast campus of Capilano College this May and June. The purpose of the course is to build the leadership capacity of our communities by supporting and tapping into the extraordinary talents of retired and semi-retired community members. The program offers eight full days of instruction over seven weeks from May 1 to June 19. Sessions will be held Thursdays and one Friday in this period. Through field work, classroom exercises and guest speakers from various public and private organizations on the Coast, participants will learn the processes of local and regional governance and how to have an impact in shaping our communities by learning how to engage effectively in those processes, learn how to get ideas and positions across, often in areas that involve strong differences of opinion and conflicting objectives, learn meeting skills and how to participate effectively in advocacy, collaboration and co-operation, learn how your experiences and skills can be applied in civic leadership and have an opportunity for on-going support, mentoring and learning through a group alumni program.

This is a pilot project, and success will encourage further offerings. There are 18 spaces available in the program. Everyone is welcome to apply with no prerequisites necessary. Course fee is $120 (including lunch) and some bursaries are available.
