Powell River Search and Rescue was called out on August 13 to help extract an injured hiker from the Tin Hat area.
According to Powell River Search and Rescue search manager Grant Wood, a hiker on the Sunshine Coast Trail had a minor injury and was unable to walk because of that.
“It was fairly extensive to get into him and we called a helicopter from Sechelt,” said Wood. “We also had a crew from Sechelt to assist because we were short of people.
“After a few hours we did in fact get the patient to an area where we could extract him by helicopter.”
The rescue occurred in high heat conditions but Wood said the search and rescue team was prepared for that kind of occurrence.
Wood said the rescue team drove into the parking lot in the Tin Hat area and was airlifted to the Tin Hat cabin, where they hiked down to the hiker.
According to a Facebook post by Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue, the team was tasked to a mutual aid in Powell River to assist Powell River Search and Rescue in the extraction of an injured hiker on the Sunshine Coast Trail in the vicinity of the Tin Hat cabin. Teams were shuttled by helicopter up to the cabin and then hiked down to the subject, the report stated. The heat played a huge role along with the tough terrain, according to the account.
The subject was located in good condition and was moved to a helicopter landing location that the teams had to clear by hand, according to the report.
“A big thank-you to Airspan Helicopters for the expertise in challenging terrain,” the report stated. “It was a great mutual effort between Powell River and Sunshine Coast teams.”
