BC Ferries has amended the sailing schedule between Horseshoe Bay and the Sunshine Coast Friday evening because of anticipated bad weather.

Instead of cancelling sailings – as the ferry service had previously warned – the Queen of Surrey will sail on the following schedule:

  • 6:30 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay
  • 7:30 p.m. leaving Langdale
  • 8:40 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay
  • 9:35 p.m. leaving Langdale
  • 10:55 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay

The last sailing from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay will leave at 11 p.m. to accommodate this schedule, said the notice.

The Nanaimo route is still facing the risk of cancellation, said a service notice, however, should the Queen of Cowichan be able to sail, it will follow this schedule:

  • 6:35 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay
  • 8:45 p.m. leaving Departure Bay
  • 10:50 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay

A wind warning is in effect in the region for this afternoon into evening, including the entire Lower Coast and the Georgia Strait, advising of strong southerly winds. Environment Canada warns of strong southeast winds of 60 km/hr, gusting to 90.

"Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur," says the warning. "High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches. Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds."
