Pender Harbour's Katherine Lake campground is opening June 7

A permanent fix to the sinkhole-afflicted road to come in the fall

Road repairs to the access road to Katherine Lake Road and Campground took place in May.

Just in time for the weekend, Katherine Lake Park and Campground is set to open Friday, June 7.

The local favourite swimming and camping destination in Pender Harbour owned by Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) didn't open as usual ahead of the May Long Weekend as repairs were still under way to a sinkhole on the access road.

Heavy rainfall caused the sinkhole in early February, closing the access road.

Last month, shortly after the regional district announced repairs to the road would keep the park closed until July, Pender Harbour contractor Don White "suggested using fill and a road plate" as a temporary road repair, Area A director Leonard Lee reported in the June edition of the Harbour Spiel.

"Better yet, he had the materials on hand and was available to do the job the next day," said Lee.

A permanent fix to the road will come in the fall, said the most recent SCRD press release.

The SCRD has approved a $200,000 budget for repairs to the road.
