Pebbles Beach is open –– but visitors beware, for now

A step is being made, however users should be extra cautious until then.

The long-closed Pebbles Beach access is now open but beach-goers should still use caution, for now.

While the stairs have reopened, winter storms washed away the logs and other beach material that were up against the retaining wall and there’s now a two-to-three-foot drop at the bottom, Gibsons director of infrastructure services Trevor Rutley told a Gibsons committee of the whole.

A step is being made, however users should be extra cautious until then.

Officially, the beach access has been closed since February 2020, because of slope instability concerns and had been set to reopen last summer. However, the project’s budget ballooned from $173,000 to $337,000 after the project’s scope unexpectedly expanded with the discovery that “subsurface conditions were softer than anticipated."

Final landscaping for the denuded slope is proposed for the second quarter of the year.
