Only one candidate for council filed papers this week for the upcoming municipal election for Gibsons.Deadline to file is today (Oct. 14) at 4 p.m.

Lee Ann Johnson confirmed this week she will seek a council position.

Johnson has lived in Gibsons since 1992. She works as a consultant to non-profit and cooperative societies for developing affordable and social housing.

Johnson has also been a strong advocate for affordable housing on the Coast and for the environment. She also sits on the community services committee at the Town of Gibsons.

Johnson ran in the last election and lost by only eight votes.

"I like the way the town has been moving. I want to see it continue in that direction," she said. "Planning issues, particularly the Upper Gibsons Neighbourhood Plan and Gospel Rock, are issues I'm concerned about. There are lots of other issues that will make this term quite interesting. I want to be a part of that and serve my community."

Johnson joins mayoralty candidates Angela Letman and Barry Janyk as the only three confirmed candidates by press deadline.

Coun. Tucker Forsyth confirmed last week he would not be running again.

This week, councillors Andrea Goldsmith and Kenan MacKenzie also announced they would not be seeking re-election.

"I always reserve the right to change my mind, but I'm not planning to run again," Goldsmith said Tuesday morning. "It was a very positive experience and worthwhile. I think we set some really good directions and did some really good things in Gibsons. I think it's time for others to come forward and step up to the plate."MacKenzie said he also enjoyed his time on council.

"I enjoyed the time of service, but it's time to devote more efforts to my family and other interests," said MacKenzie. "It was a tough decision, one that I've wrestled with for awhile. I still have concerns over the community centre and the community forest, but now I'll be a voice from the sidelines. It was a wonderful experience. I met a lot of interesting people and dealt with a lot of interesting issues."
