A delegation of nurses from the Sunshine Coast and Lower Mainland rallied in last Saturday's Sea Cavalcade parade to bring public attention to the role they play in the delivery of health care.
British Columbia Nurses Union (BCNU) Coastal Mountain regional chair Kath-Ann Terrett organized the contingent of nurses to take part in the parade along with the BCNU bus.
She said the nurses used the demonstration to remind the public of the more serious message they have in asking for broad support for their "Our Nurses Matter" campaign. The campaign aims to honour nursing in B.C. and to share stories and knowledge about the fundamental role that nurses play in the health care system.
"Our nurses went to enjoy the festivities, but went to also remind the public about the value of nursing in health care," Terrett said. "Nurses need to make their voices heard as front-line health care providers, as patient advocates and as members of their communities. Nurses will continue to join with the public to pressure decision-makers to co-ordinate and fund health care so patients' needs are met."
