Locally-based artist Courtney Lamb will be creating a new mural for Sechelt’s Hackett Park bathroom and concession building, the municipality has announced.
Mural painting is set to begin Aug. 29, and should be completed by the end of September, weather permitting. The public washrooms will remain open during this time.
The mural design is called Coastal Blooms and takes inspiration from the Coast’s local flora including ferns, foxgloves, daisies, salmonberries, and mountain arnica.
Sechelt issued a call for proposals for the mural in May. Eight local artists submitted designs. A jury of district staff and community members assessed the proposals. Lamb’s design was selected for its pops of bright colour, playfully unique design, and appropriateness for a park setting.
Lamb was born and raised on the Sunshine Coast. She has spent the last few years working and volunteering with local arts organizations such as the Festival of the Written Arts and Deer Crossing the Art Farm. While completing a degree in graphic design at Capilano University, Lamb worked on several murals in Vancouver.
“We’re looking forward to adding some colour and vibrancy onto this building,” said Jayme Anderson, parks manager for the District of Sechelt. “We think the mural will be welcoming for all ages and park users.”
In March, Sechelt received $300,000 in provincial tourism funding for Hackett Park improvements that include the mural and a water connection for the washroom structure, as well as for playground upgrade.
