More school staff changes

There are more staffing changes on the horizon for School District 46 (SD46), with two employees taking on new positions and two employees leaving SD46 in the coming months.

There are more staffing changes on the horizon for School District 46 (SD46), with two employees taking on new positions and two employees leaving SD46 in the coming months.

Brian Johnson, the current principal of Davis Bay Elementary School, will assume the interim principalship at Madeira Park Elementary School in September. The current Madeira Park Elementary School principal, Melanie Robinson, will be leaving the position "due to other commitments," according to a press release from SD46.

As reported previously in Coast Reporter, former alternative school principal Sally Thicke will take over the Davis Bay principal position in the fall.

Robert Collison has been appointed as manager of facilities and transportation and will start in July.

"Mr. Collison has been manager, buildings and maintenance in the Kamloops school district and the Richmond school district over the past seven years," stated a SD46 release. "He has over 20 years experience working in school districts and has in-depth knowledge of building systems and structures. His school district familiarity of custodial, grounds and maintenance will benefit him in his role to provide the best environment to support learning and teaching in SD46."

Collison said he is looking forward to taking on the new position.

"I am very excited to be joining the team at SD46. I look forward to a bright and sustainable future for the staff and students on the beautiful Sunshine Coast," he said.

School board chair Silas White said he looks forward to having Collison join SD46, and he thanked Stewart Hercus for filling the position while they interviewed for the job.

Two more positions will need filling soon, as secretary treasurer Diane Ready and assistant superintendent Tom Hierck leave SD46 this August.

Ready will be retiring Aug. 31 and Hierck will start a new position as executive director of the B.C. Principals' and Vice-Principals' Association (BCPVPA) on Aug. 1.

"I congratulate Tom on his new and exciting role with BCPVPA," said superintendent of schools Deborah Palmer. "Tom's focus on curriculum development and implementation complemented the already strong management team of principals existing in our school district. BCPVPA is fortunate to have Tom playing a key leadership role in their organization."

Both employees will be missed, and White said the board has appreciated all the work Ready and Hierck have done.

"We have appreciated the services of Diane and Tom and wish them continued success in their future endeavours," he said.

SD46 anticipates hiring staff for these two empty positions when the new superintendent of schools, Patrick Bocking, starts in August.
