Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons says new provincial emergency preparedness funding will help improve emergency operation centres and better equip local governments and First Nations to respond to emergencies and keep people safe.
“Emergency Operation Centre funding is an important step towards keeping people and families safe in times of disaster,” stated Simons in a media release. “New Democrats are committed to improving capacity, communication and operations, making sure residents can rely on their communities when they need support.”
qathet Regional District is receiving $25,000 in funding for EOC Training Exercises. This project will enable the community to be equipped and ready in the event of a disaster.
Tla’amin Nation is receiving $25,000 for an emergency services radio network.
Sunshine Coast Regional District will receive $25,000 for EOC Communication Modernization.
More than $3.2 million in funding is being shared among 84 First Nations and local governments to help communities build or upgrade emergency operations centres (EOCs), purchase equipment or enhance capacity through volunteer recruitment, retention and training, according to the release.
