Lower Sunshine Coast declared ‘functionally an island’ (April Fools)

One has to take a ferry to get here anyway – why not make it official?

It’s time to throw out those “Not an island” T-shirts and stickers – the Sunshine Coast is now officially considered an island.

The provincial government, in an announcement on April 1, said the lower Coast will be treated as an island, although its geographical location has not changed.

“Enough is enough,” the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (FLNRORD) said in a statement. “The Sunshine Coast has for too long confused visitors from as close as the Lower Mainland with its ‘Not an island’ merch. Since you need to take a boat or aircraft to get there, we are officially declaring the Sunshine Coast an island.”

In a separate press release, BC Ferries swiftly said the province’s declaration does not come with a new ferry or the classification of Route 3 as a major route. It will also not change the passage between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale terminals as, again, no physical changes have been noted to the geographical area.

Upon hearing the news, residents demanded to know where they would be able to get “Now an island” or “Not not an island” T-shirts and stickers to replace their previous Sunshine Coast swag. Local historians were in a tizzy trying to incorporate the new information into their exhibits. Visitors seemed not to notice the change.

“Hasn’t it always been an island?” one ferry passenger remarked as they disembarked from the Queen of Cowichan, before asking for directions to Tofino.

Fake news? You bet! Happy April Fools’ Day.
