Lisa Hilton is the recipient of the Darren Entwistle Community Builder Award.

The Gibsons Community Building Society honoured Lisa Hilton with the Darren Entwistle Community Builder award at the society’s fundraising gala Oct. 5, during which she was recognized for her “outstanding community leadership in helping to build a healthy, caring and vibrant community.”

A news release from the society, said Hilton was “humbled and honoured to accept the award in the company of so many amazing recipients.”

The Gibsons resident added, since moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2018, she has met “many people who put a lot of time and energy into making it a better place.”

Hilton told the crowd she was inspired by the creation of Gibsons Public Market as a community gathering space and saw an opportunity to use it as a hub to bring people together over Mahjong, a social game that connects people. In reflecting on what the recognition meant, Hilton said, “when I hear people say, ‘it’s my big day out’ or ‘I really look forward to coming’ or ‘I have made a lot of friends,’ it makes my volunteer time worthwhile.”

“We are proud to present this award to Lisa Hilton,” says Pam Robertson, chair of the society’s board of directors. “Lisa is a natural community builder, she loves connecting with people, learning personal stories and bringing people together for a common purpose.”

Robertson added, Hilton excels at creating a feeling of belonging within her volunteer activities, from Mahj on the Coast to her work at the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives, the Sunshine Coast Genealogy Club and Gibsons Community Building Society.

“Her talents include offering a warm welcome, helping people thrive by offering encouragement, building excitement, and creating a sense of pride in the community projects she leads and supports,” Robertson said in the release.

Gibsons Community Building Society is a not-for-profit society established in 2013, to build and operate Gibsons Public Market and the Nicholas Sonntag TidePools Aquarium.
