Yet another strong weather system is hitting the Sunshine Coast Tuesday with winds gusting to between 70 and 80 kilometres an hour, forcing BC Ferries to modify service on its Langdale-Horseshoe Bay route and cancel other sailings.
According to a BC Ferries travel advisory, the service changes will come into effect Jan. 5 after 5 p.m. and include the following:
6:30 p.m. departing Horseshoe Bay
7:30 p.m. departing Langdale
8:40 p.m. departing Horseshoe Bay (customers travelling through Earls Cove to Powell River will be accommodated by the Malaspina Sky).
9:25 p.m. departing Langdale
10:55 p.m. departing Horseshoe Bay
The approaching system is expected to “spread very strong winds to Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast,” with winds rising in the morning and staying into the evening, said an Environment Canada wind warning.
Hardest hit regions will be over “exposed coastal sections” near the Strait of Georgia, Haro Strait and the Southern Gulf Islands, the warning said.
“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.”
Several sailings across Georgia Strait have also been cancelled. Affected routes are: Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen-Duke Point, Tsawwassen-Gulf Islands, Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay, Powell River-Comox, Powell River-Texada, Campbell River-Quadra Island, Quadra Island-Cortes Island and Skidegate-Alliford Bay.
