Knowledge-based cluster meets

Members of the Intelligence Services Cluster (ISC) met on May 25 for a combined social event and discussion.

Members of the Intelligence Services Cluster (ISC) met on May 25 for a combined social event and discussion.

The ISC is a group of Sunshine Coast professionals and technology providers that was formed into a cluster by BCI Economic Development Coordinator Michael McLaughlin.

The Cluster is linked by an on-line portal (www.coastisc.net) that enables members to do business with each other.

McLaughlin said conventional clusters form because of competitive advantages. "We are trying to create similar advantages among virtual businesses in a virtual cluster," he said.

Economic benefits are more local spending by businesses, increased revenues and attraction of more of these types of businesses.

"The best thing to come out of the Intelligence Services Cluster info session/mixer was the group desire to refer business to each other and build 'teams' of people to work together on large projects," added Laurie McConnell of Big Pacific. "We've all had the experience of multiple client needs converging at one time, or wanting to bid only on a part of a larger project - the ISC can play a strong part in helping us leverage our strengths. "

McConnell said she looks ahead to a day when, "A standards/ethics board would really help as well, so the quality of work/accountability to clients would meet consistent standards and increase trust in ISC member businesses as well." McLaughlin said an accountability component will be introduced before the Cluster is marketed as a whole.

Rae Abbott of Rapid Edge Technologies highlights the benefits of collaboration. "Finding community and being able to share and explore ideas about where we live, how we can support each other and grow together in business, is critical to the sustainability of the Sunshine Coast," said Abbott. "The Intelligent Service Cluster encourages this kind of thinking and cooperation. It's a privilege to be part of such a progressive and forward thinking group."
