On March 11, the Islands Trust welcomed its new chair, Laura Patrick.

Patrick is no stranger to Islands Trust, she’s been a Salt Spring Island Local Trust Area trustee since 2018 and is serving her second term on the council.

In the release, Patrick said it is an honour to be elected, “As we navigate the challenges

and priorities ahead, I am committed to working collaboratively with my fellow trustees to make progress on the issues that matter to islanders. The work of local trust committees, Bowen Island Municipality, and the Islands Trust Conservancy is essential in this, and I look forward to supporting continued cooperative efforts to preserve and protect the Islands Trust Area.”

Islands Trust works to preserve 13 major islands and 450 smaller islands across a 5,200 square kilometre area.

The chair’s role involves guiding discussions at the Islands Trust Council, Islands Trust Executive Committee and certain local trust committee meetings and acts as the spokesperson for the organization.

Some key challenges Islands Trust faces include climate change, lack of affordable housing,

freshwater limitations, species at risk and development and tourism pressures.

The previous chair, Peter Luckham, served for three terms and will continue his work with Islands Trust as a trustee for the Thetis Island Local Trust Area, where he has served since 2005.

The Island Trust release said, “Throughout his tenure, he has been a dedicated leader, bringing

passion and commitment to the role,” and thanked Luckham for his years of service as

Chair and looks forward to his continued contributions as a trustee.
