The District of Sechelt is seeking ideas on what community members want to see developed at the Sechelt airport.

Public open houses/information meetings have been scheduled for March 15 and 29 at the Seaside Centre. The open houses will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Information will be on display for public review on the existing airport operation and what various upgrades, such as runway expansion or installation of flight safety improvements, could do to enhance the types of service the airport can offer.

Information meetings will follow the open houses from 7 to 9 p.m. During this time, people will be asked for their input on what services and facilities they would like to see at the airport. There will be opportunities to ask questions or provide comments on different types of airport development.

"Our airport is an asset that could be used to create more economic and quality of life benefits for area residents," said Mayor Cam Reid. "Airport development could mean improved air ambulance service for the Coast. It could also mean economic development and job creation opportunities related to expanded airport facilities."

Reid said the issue of airport development would have implications for the future of the entire Sunshine Coast.

"This consultation is an important opportunity for all Coast residents to provide their views," said Reid. "As with any development, there will be impacts for other areas of residents' lives. Before Sechelt moves forward, we need to determine what type of airport the Sunshine Coast wants. Then Sechelt, as owners of the airport, can look at airport options that can meet area residents expectations."

Council will use the community input received to develop a request for proposals (RFP) for development and/or operation of the airport. This RFP will be circulated to qualified firms that have indicated they are interested in working with the community. Sechelt is currently offering individuals and groups an opportunity to submit their qualifications and experience related to airport development/operations, through a request for expressions of interest process.

Information on the public consultation process is available on the district website at www.sechelt.ca. Public comment forms that will be used at the open house will be available on the website and at the district office by March 7.
