The last incumbent Sechelt councillor to declare their intentions for October says he will be running again.
Darren Inkster made the announcement during the Sept. 5 council meeting, while making reference to a recent conversation he had with the manager of Sechelt’s homeless shelter.
“I think this council needs to have a discussion, and the future council needs to have a discussion, on that issue in our community because there’s much more that we can do, and that’s one of the reasons why, with some encouragement from many friends in the community, I am announcing that I am running again in the fall election and that’s one of the issues I want to work on.”
He said the other issues include the environment and continuing to diversify the local economy.
This is Inkster’s fourth term as a councillor, and he also served one term as mayor.
“I’ll be continuing to bring ethical, accountable governance to the table at the District of Sechelt council if elected,” he said.
Inkster, who turned 50 this year, was first elected to council in 1999, and when he went on to become mayor in 2008 he was the youngest person to ever hold the job.
He was defeated in 2011, but came back to stand successfully for council in 2014.
