The third annual Hike for Hospice is coming to the Coast May 2, and coordinator Jean Rice hopes to see all ages and abilities out to take part in the leisurely walk along the waterfront.
The walk is about two kilometres long and starts at the Seaside Centre at 1 p.m., winding along the waterfront into Sechelt Indian Band lands and back again.
There will be hot dogs and drinks for sale during registration from noon to 1 p.m. at the Seaside Centre, and after the walk.
Last year about 50 people took part in the hike and $4,500 was raised. Rice hopes to meet or exceed that number this year.
The hospice program is a special kind of health care and support for patients and families with a life-threatening illnesses that have no cure. Hospice care is designed to meet the physical, psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
All the money raised on the Coast will go to the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society to support two palliative care beds at the Gibsons Garden Inn and its volunteer programs.
Rice says more and more people are taking an interest in the hospice society that is entirely supported by corporate and community donations at the moment.
"We didn't receive any grants this year, so this fund-raising effort is important," said Rice.
She notes people who want to take part in the event don't have to complete the entire walk, just come and do what they can.
If you would like to help but can't come to the walk, Rice says you can send a donation to the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society PO Box 2698, Sechelt, B.C., V0N3A0. For more information, contact Rice at 604-740-1729.
