Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department is sporting a new look: it has a new truck, and a new logo.
The logo, designed in collaboration with the shíshálh Nation over two years, “recognizes the land that the fire department staff and volunteers do their important work on,” says a Sunshine Coast Regional District press release. The logo features a double-headed eagle, the traditional name for the area (Xwesam) and a Haida sun.
The new truck – black with blazing red along the sides (and the new logo) – is designed for better firefighter protection in initial response, including a nozzle mounted on the bumper that can start fire suppression even as the truck approaches the fire, said the release. It also has limited off-road capability, allowing it to go where the larger trucks may not trundle.
“It’s very fulfilling to now see this logo on the side of our brand-new firefighting vehicle,” said department chief Patrick Higgins in the news release, acknowledging that they operate on the lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation and within the shíshálh Nation’s swiya. “We are honoured that they would collaborate with us on the project.”
“The shíshálh Nation is very pleased with the outcome of this project,” said xwash Steven Feschuk, shíshálh Nation’s acting stewardship and territorial land management division manager in the release. “The inclusion of the name Xwesam and double headed eagle in the logo has great significance to the shíshálh Nation and is a great example of reconciliation.
“The shíshálh Nation will be happy to see this new vehicle in the swiya (land) servicing our communities and keeping everyone safe.”
