Almost five years after it was closed due to structural problems, the historic Granthams Landing Community Hall will officially reopen on Friday, Feb. 14 with a public community celebration and ribbon cutting from 11 a.m. to noon.
The reopening follows eight months of major renovations costing about $525,000. Of that amount, $235,414 was provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund.
The renovation project involved replacing the foundation and the roof and trusses with a cathedral hemlock wood interior ceiling, insulating the entire building, providing a fully accessible interior washroom, and rebuilding the entrance. It also included a new septic treatment system, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and adding an accessible parking stall and an accessible ramp entrance to the building.
The project team consisted of architects Scott Gordon and Gerald Longson and Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) staff. The construction work was done by Summerhill Fine Homes Ltd.
Originally a church, the historic hall was built by volunteers in 1931 and sold to the community in 1993. In 2009, the SCRD acquired it and added it to its Community Heritage Register as a significant heritage property. The building was a venue for a variety of community activities and events until it was closed in early 2015 due to structural issues with the roof and foundation.
“The refurbished hall will give local residents and visitors a new space to discover and experience high-quality professional arts performances, and provide artists a new space to create, teach and present,” the SCRD in a release.
Attending the grand reopening will be MP Patrick Weiler, SCRD chair Lori Pratt, and a representative from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation.
The facility is located at 846 Church Rd., Langdale. For hall booking information contact 604-885-6801, extension 6611.
