The last parcel of Gibsons zoned single-family residential property that does not allow secondary suites will shortly be rezoned to allow them.
While almost all single-family residentially zoned properties in Gibsons have been allowed secondary suites since 2020, they are still prohibited on Block 7, Chaster Road – the Gospel Rock development.
This will be the only change Gibsons needs to make to meet B.C.’s new housing zoning requirements ahead of a June 30 deadline, says a staff report for the May 7 council meeting.
Last fall, the province brought in sweeping housing regulation changes, which has seen local governments having to change their bylaws to align with the province, to allow more small-scale, multi-unit housing.
As Gibsons is yet smaller than 5,000 people and doesn’t have 15-minute frequency bus service, some density requirements around allowing three to six housing units on some single-family parcels have don’t apply to the municipality.
Council passed three readings of the rezoning unanimously on May 7.
