Under a warm summer sun, representatives from the Town of Gibsons gathered at Oceanmount Boulevard to officially cut the ribbon on the Well 6 project.
The June 28 ceremony marks the commissioning of the largest producing well in town — at an estimated 1,900 cubic metres per day, according to a press release.
“The addition of Well 6 will enable the Town to more effectively deliver water to our residents,” Mayor Silas White said in the release. “Building water sustainability in Gibsons through not relying on the SCRD’s Chapman Creek system for Zone 3 was one of the most important initiatives of the Council I was on two terms ago, and I am proud and elated to be here to turn on this well five years later. This will have a significant impact on our regional water challenges by providing a foundation of water sustainability and resilience in the Gibsons area.”
Well 6 will also serve as an additional water source if another well needs to be temporarily shut down for maintenance or repairs, Trevor Rutley, the Town’s director of infrastructure services, added. “We want to thank our consulting team at Urban Systems, the prime contractor Industra, and Town staff for all the work that went into making this project a success.”
Well 6 was drilled in 2019 as part of Gibsons’ aquifer service expansion project. After design adjustments responded to neighbourhood concerns, construction at the site began in June 2022.
