Grab a leash, your canine pal, family and friends and get ready for the seventh annual Sunshine Coast SPCA Walkathon.

The walk is being held on Sunday, Oct. 3 with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the 3.5 km walk at 11. This annual event raises much-needed funds for the local shelter to help continue the community service the SPCA provides. It's a great way to show your support, get some fresh air and exercise and have some fun at the same time. Participants are encouraged to collect pledge donations prior to the event and pledge forms are available at most veterinary clinics, pet stores, on-line @ www.spca.bc.ca/sunshine coast and at the shelter. If you don't have time to collect pledges you can still participate in the event by registering on the day. Registration fees are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children (children under 5 years are free).

Registration fees are waived for walkers who have collected pledges of $10 or more.

No dog? Can't borrow one? No problem! There are shelter dogs who would love to participate. If you're interested, please contact the shelter at least a couple of days ahead of the walk. This year the SPCA has added a number of new and interactive activities that will serve to nourish, inform and entertain participants.

The line up in the morning includes: coffee and Timbits, face painting for the children, a presentation on dog safe, a demonstration on positive obedience training plus information on the Tellington Touch. Members from the Animal Disaster Response Program will also be on hand all day to provide information on their program, answer questions and help you and your pet prepare in the event of a disaster.

Following the walk there will be barbecue lunch by donation plus canine contests that are guaranteed to raise a smile or two.

For more information on the walkathon, please contact the shelter at 604-740-0301 or visit the branch website www .spca.bc.ca/ sunshinecoast.
