Free surgical masks are being distributed on the Sunshine Coast.

The distribution comes after the United Way “identified a concern that not everyone who needs to travel to access essential services or for other essential reasons has the means or ability to obtain a clean face mask,” said a Feb. 10 release announcing the initiative.

One million masks are being distributed across B.C., through United Way’s support network of local agencies.

The giveaway is expected to continue through March.

The masks are intended for children, young families, seniors and homeless populations.

The Roberts Creek Community School Society, Sechelt Community Schools and Sunshine Coast Community Services Society are making masks available at their locations.

Masks were sourced by Deloitte and OEC Group, assisted by TransLink, Vancouver International Airport, BC Ferries, BCAA, SCI and BC Transit.

“Everyone is doing their part to flatten the COVID-19 curve and we know that masks do make a difference,” said Michael McKnight, president of United Way Lower Mainland in the release.
