Food in the garbage a thing of the past for the Sunshine Coast

Starting Nov. 1 all Sunshine Coast residents must keep food, compostable food-soiled paper and recyclable paper out of the garbage as the SCRD tries to prolong the Sechelt dump's life.

Watch where you're aiming that crumpled-up ball of paper – it better not be at the garbage bin.

Starting Nov. 1,  Sunshine Coast residents, businesses and institutions will have to keep food waste, compostable food-soiled paper and recyclable paper out of their regular garbage.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is enacting new waste disposal regulations to prolong the Sechelt landfill's life, which is estimated to expire in less than three years.

Every municipality and every electoral area on the Coast is affected by the regulations, said an SCRD press release. While most residents have curbside food waste pick-up, Pender Harbour does not. As such, food waste drop-off for Pender Harbour and Egmont residents will be available at the Pender Harbour transfer station, said the press release.

The press release also notes that compostable bags that are BPI certified will be allowed as bin liners. The change does not apply to other plastic items, such as cutlery, said the release.
