Fire at Hightide Housing Aug. 16, described as ‘very small’

All of the residents of Hightide Modular Housing were evacuated Friday morning, after a small fire broke out within one of the units.

A fire within a unit at Hightide Modular Housing on Hightide Avenue Friday morning, was so small the sprinkler system wasn’t activated, says Sechelt fire chief Dwight Davison.

“It was very small. The tenant was able to throw some of the smouldering debris out the window to keep the fire from spreading any larger,” says Davison. “And then our crews on scene got up there, investigated, found the remaining smouldering material and dealt with it.”

Davison says all of the residents of Hightide were evacuated and, after the fire was extinguished, fire ighters used fans to help push smoke out of the building so it would be safe for them to return.

In total, two fire trucks/apparatus and 10 firefighters responded to the fire, which was quickly extinguished around 10:45 a.m. In 2023, a fire at the nearby Upper Deck shelter displaced 30 occupants for more than eight months while repairs were completed.
