A 35-year-old male from Burnaby is in critical condition after losing control of his blue 2003 BMW Z4 convertible on Highway 101 at Stewart Road in Gibsons Monday night.

According to RCMP, on June 6 at 11:20 p.m. the BMW Z4 was observed by a Sunshine Coast RCMP officer travelling at 135 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. The officer activated her emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Immediately at that time the vehicle failed to make a turn at a "T" intersection and hit and went through a concrete barrier. The driver and lone occupant was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital in critical condition.

"The investigation indicates that alcohol is a factor in combination with excessive speed, which is a dangerous mixture at any time," said Sgt. Peter Thiessen Senior Media Relations Officer for the Lower Mainland District. "The sad fact is an average of 20,800 injury and fatality crashes occur in the Lower Mainland each year as a result of high risk driving, which includes excessive speeding."
