The Elves Club is a volunteer organization that collects perishable food, new gifts and toys. Combined with fresh vegetables, bread and a turkey (bought with money earned or donated from the community), Christmas hampers are made up and delivered by volunteers to needy people on the Coast a week before Christmas. The Elves Club has been delivering hampers for over three decades. The Club is now preparing for the coming season. It is dependent on the generosity of individuals, businesses and community groups for the funds required to provide these hampers. In 2004, 675 hampers were delivered to families on the Sunshine Coast to make the holiday season a little more joyous for over 2,300 men, women, teens and children. The Elves Telethon will be held on Dec. 3, in the Heritage Playhouse Theatre in Gibsons and shown live on Coast Cable, Channel 11, from 2 to 10 p.m. Donations, pledges and presentations are welcomed. Membership to the Elves Club is $3.65 (one penny a day) and one food item per month.Poverty is an ever-increasing social condition. There are many people whose only bright spot in the holiday season is the Elves hamper. Contributions to this effort would be deeply appreciated. Call 604-886-4547.
