Twenty-six volunteers helped the SeaChange Marine Conservation Society prepare 2,393 eelgrass shoots that were planted by divers in Gibsons Harbour and Gambier Island’s Cotton Bay on Sept. 8 and 9. Right: The eelgrass transplants, as seen prepared by Sunshine Coast volunteers, came exactly two years after a 2019 survey of Gibsons’ nearshore ecosystems and eelgrass beds. Eelgrass is relatively scarce in Howe Sound, but part of a healthy marine ecosystem, habitat and food chain, and is used by coastal First Nations for harvesting herring eggs.
