School District No. 46 (SD46) is now formally considering closing one or more of: Davis Bay, Kinnikinnick and Sechelt elementary schools.

Motions to close Davis Bay and Kinnikinnick passed first reading at a school board meeting Tuesday evening, Jan. 26 at Chatelech Secondary School. A motion to close Sechelt Elementary passed first reading Jan.12.

The bylaw to close Davis Bay passed first reading with a 4-2 vote, with trustees Lori Fielding, Fran Heppell, Greg Russell and Ken Sinnott supporting it, and trustee Jason Scott and vice chair Dave Mewhort opposing it. The motion to close Kinnikinnick passed first reading unanimously.

According to SD46 bylaws, the board can't discuss a motion before it reaches second reading. More than 50 parents and other members of the community attended the meeting, but the board took no questions from the floor.

The board will hold a public consultation Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. to hear feedback on these two motions plus the motion to close Sechelt. All three motions will come forward for second and third readings Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Both meetings will take place in the library at Chat.
