A celebration of life for Daniel Kingsbury, who was well known on the Coast for his musical talent and environmental activism, will be held this Saturday, June 6 at 2:30 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Hall.
Kingsbury died suddenly on the evening of Monday, June 1, near his home in Roberts Creek.
The singer and musician was well known on the Coast for his incredible musical talent. He spent several years as the lead singer of the band Mindil Beach, which he co-founded in 2009.
Kingsbury also co-founded The Jellyfish Project in 2011, which incorporates live music with environmental education aimed at students in high school.
To date, more than 52,000 students across Canada have benefited from Jellyfish Project presentations that engage them with music, educate them with images and statistics and equip them with ways to make a difference.
The Jellyfish Project’s aim is to effect change at the grassroots level.
“Music has gone hand in hand with the revolutions and movements of the past. It’s our job now to carry on that tradition and help accelerate the most essential revolution of our time, the transition to environmental sustainability,” Kingsbury wrote of the project on his website.
Knowing Kingsbury’s passion for the environment, friend Mikhaila Searle, who planned the celebration of life for this Saturday, asked people to travel to the hall in a green way.
“In the spirit of the occasion, and because Daniel was such a lover of the environment, we ask that you walk, bike, carpool or bus to the hall if possible. If you feel you must drive, please park at the Mason Hall next door or on Roberts Creek Road, as parking at the hall will be extremely limited,” Searle wrote on the celebration’s Facebook page.
Kingsbury’s family is also asking for donations to either The Jellyfish Project or the Daniel Kingsbury Music for Youth Endowment Fund in lieu of flowers or gifts. Donations can be made online at www.thejellyfishproject.org or at www.sccfoundation.com
Messages of support to Kingsbury’s family and friends have been pouring in on his Facebook page with many noting he was an “amazing” human being who was “kind, gentle and talented.”
“His fine music touched all of us along with his inspirational Jellyfish Project,” Scott Smith wrote online. “It seems to me Dan packed a heck of a lot of wonderful living into his 28 years. He won’t be forgotten by me and anyone who knew him.”
