Cross country skiing trails welcome a break in the weather on Dec. 21.

After a week-long delay, Dakota Ridge will be ready to welcome the public this Saturday, Dec. 22.

Temperatures had fallen to -5 Celsius by Friday, Dec. 21 and overnight snowfall of 13 centimetres brought total accumulation to 55 centimetres.

The shíshálh Main, Yellow Cedar, Sḵwxwú7mesh Loop and part of Hemlock cross-country ski trails are anticipated to be open. Snowshoers should expect to be able to use Balsam Loop and Ridge Walker. The sledding hill will be open, too.

The recreation area north of Wilson Creek was supposed to open the weekend of Dec. 15 but rain and warmer temperatures prevented sufficient snow accumulation.

Approximately one metre of snow is needed to open all trails.

The forest service access road is in good condition, with snow and ice accumulating at 10 kilometres. Vehicles are required to use snow chains and use all-wheel drive.

Regular updates and conditions can be found on the Dakota Ridge Facebook Page.
