Good things can come out of a bad hair cut.
Howe Sound Pulp and Paper employees and friends are raising funds for BC Children’s Hospital and to see a co-worker’s hair cut.
It was at Howe Sound Fire Department’s Valentine’s Dinner that Shara Cody struck up a conversation with a fellow employee at the mill – Paul Van Vliet – and suggested maybe it was time for his co-worker's COVID hair to go.
“There was some protesting on Paul’s part, so I took a page out of George Watson’s book and asked if he would let me cut it if we raised money for BC Children’s Hospital,” explains Cody in a post about the fundraiser. “Paul said he would do it if I drummed up $2500. I down-sold him until he reluctantly agreed to do it for $500.”
In no time flat, the first donation came in at $100 and was quickly matched by Van Vliet’s spouse. “Within minutes, we were up to $710.”
Howe Sound Pulp and Paper has since agreed to chip in $2,500 and the mill’s unions may also be contributing a few thousand dollars.
Theo Kontekakis of Theo’s Barber Stories in Lower Gibsons is donating a professional hair cut on Feb. 28.
Cody notes in an email to Coast Reporter that Canadian Pacific is matching donations to the hospital – up to $300,000 – until the end of the month.
“Having owned/operated the lottery booth at Sunnycrest Mall for over 17 years, and seen so many locals on a regular basis, I know how lucky we are to have a facility like BC Children's Hospital, and how important it is to support them,” wrote Cody in the post. “My heartstrings have been pulled many times in this small town by kids who were so well treated at BCCH, they did not really understand they were sick.”
