The community said "yes" to a pool in Sechelt and arena in Gibsons. Now a community group lead by Gibsons Bill Hubbs is looking for additional funding to make the centres a reality.
"People think we got the $19 million and now it will happen, but they don't understand the $19 million is just a costing for the two facilities based on preliminary conceptual drawings. The price will likely be more," said Hubbs.
Hubbs is the chair of the Fund Development Committee for the recreation facilities, a community group dedicated to ensuring the public gets "what they voted for" through seeking additional funding.
"We want to make sure that all the components that were presented to the public are actually there in the finished product," said Hubbs. "We also want to add a community wish list and see if we can fundraise enough to add in that wish list."
He and a group of about five community members have already started looking for donations from major corporations on and off Coast, senior governments, philanthropists, business owners, local organizations and service groups.
"Because we are a community group, we can access different sources of money than local governments," said Hubbs, who is looking for community members in Sechelt to join the Fund Development Committee. "So far, all of our volunteers are from the Gibsons area. We want participants from the Sechelt and Halfmoon Bay areas as well."
