A Vancouver Island man is dead following a single-vehicle accident in Roberts Creek Thursday morning.

Around 11 a.m. on Jan. 20, Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to the accident in the 3700 block of the Sunshine Coast Highway at Rat Portage Hill in Roberts Creek.

According to police, witnesses reported seeing a truck travelling eastbound and veer right without interference, striking the cement barricade sending the vehicle left, across three lanes of traffic, into the ditch, where it struck a tree and came to rest.

Paramedics conducted CPR on the lone male occupant of the vehicle, however he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"At this time we are under the impression that the driver was in medical distress prior to the accident" said Cpl. Steve Chubey. "We are just lucky that he didn't hit another vehicle as the vehicle was reported to cross into on-coming traffic."

Police are withholding the drivers' identity until family members can be contacted. An autopsy has been scheduled in order to determine the cause of death.
