With the arrival of spring and the Sunshine Coast bear population re-activating after their winter wind-down, the BC conservation officer service has adopted the practice of naming bears after local elected officials.
The first bear encountered engaging with the public in Gibsons was named Bill. Upon closer inspection of the animal, the officer determined that it was a female who was in charge of two female cubs. The bear’s name was quickly changed to Aleria, and the cubs, were given the monikers Anne and Marie.
Officers stated that as they did not want to disturb Aleria and her offspring to confirm the gender of the young, they are holding the names David and Stafford in reserve for use if needed to re-name one or both of the cubs.
The officers confirmed to Coast Reporter editor, Bronwyn Bea(i)rsto, that the names Alton and Donna are hands-on favourites for the first bears to be reported to be frequent visitors to populated areas north of Gibsons.
The bears will hold no voting power on council and are not eyeing an election run, it was confirmed to Coast Reporter.
Of course, this is just a joke. Happy April Fools' Day!
