Nearby boaters came to the rescue of two people on board a burning boat near the Trail Islands off Sechelt on Tuesday evening, July 6.

A communications advisor for the coast guard told Coast Reporter that a report of a vessel fire came in after 7 p.m. The coast guard’s Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) issued a mayday call to other vessels in the area to help.

A landing craft in the area responded, picking up the two people on board the 22-foot vessel. They were taken to shore at Selma Park, and no injuries were reported.

MCTS issued a navigation warning to boaters to avoid the area of the wreckage. The vessel was left on the water to burn, and no sheening was reported on the water.

“Coast Guard will be re-assessing the vessel this morning and ensuring an appropriate response from the owner,” Michelle Imbeau of the coast guard said in an email on July 7.
