A group of music lovers from Chatelech Secondary School is spending spring break cutting a CD. The group, spearheaded by Chat Grade 12 student Daniel Kingsbury, is at work recording a new CD at a cabin in Roberts Creek.

The students, all in Grade 12, put on a musical launch of sorts for their peers at the school on March 18.

Daniel said once the CD is complete, the group plans to release it for sale at various outlets on the Coast. They also have several concerts planned to coincide with the launch expected sometime in early June.

"There just seemed to be a huge number of musicians as part of this year's Grade 12 class," Daniel said. "We got together and we enjoy playing together. We decided one night that putting together our own record label and CD would be a really cool idea."

Daniel approached the school and his music teacher, and the idea took off from there.

"It grew out of our music program and guitar course," said teacher Karen Tigert. "Daniel was interested in the music studio idea and approached me with the independent idea. It's just fantastic to see Daniel and the other students embracing music and getting together to produce a project like this."

Daniel added that the school has really got behind the idea, helping to provide a computer and equipment for the project.

"We have about 15 guys working together on this project," he said. "We've been waiting for the mics and some new equipment to get here. They just arrived, and we're going to spend our break recording the tunes and working on the CD."

Waking Life Records is the name of the group's label. Daniel said they hope to create a double CD of original music.

"We hope to make 1,000 copies and sell the CDs on the Coast," he said. "We want to hold some concerts in June, probably at the new theatre here, with all sales of the CD and ticket sale proceeds going to charity. This project for us is all about the love of the music. I'm really excited about this - it's going to be a great project."
