The Town of Gibsons has advanced the rezoning of two existing cannabis stores whose temporary use permits (TUP) had expired, following council resolutions during its April 8 regular meeting.
The first store, at 442 Marine Drive received adoption while the other at 1095 Sunshine Coast Highway went as far as third reading.
The store at 442 Marine Drive operated under a TUP from October 26, 2018 to 2021. Since then, it has operated in nonconforming use.
Similarly, the store at 1095 Sunshine Coast Highway had a TUP from 2020 to 2023 and had been operating in non-conforming use.
A public hearing was waved for these applications, and notice was sent out to neighbours within 100 metres of the stores. Staff said they only received one piece of correspondence from this, which supported the rezoning.
When these applications were last seen during the town’s March 18 regular meeting, staff confirmed both locations meet the locational criteria for cannabis stores within the Town of Gibsons. This means both stores are not within 100 metres of an elementary school and are more than 100 metres away from each other.
They also confirmed both stores have provincial non-medical cannabis retail licences posted in the respective stores.
Council unanimously adopted the rezoning at 442 Marine Drive and gave third reading to the rezoning at 1095 Sunshine Coast Highway.
