A Staffordshire bull terrier has been euthanized following an investigation by Town of Gibsons bylaw enforcement.
Bylaw officer Sue Booth confirmed with Coast Reporter the dog was surrendered to the town and euthanized on May 6, in accordance with the town’s dog licensing and regulation bylaw.
According to witnesses, the bull terrier attacked and killed a 20-lb. Shih Tzu-poodle mix named Bo while the dogs were walking behind Elphinstone Secondary School the evening of May 2.
Coast Reporter requested more details about the nature of the attack, including whether the dogs involved were off leash, but the town declined to comment, citing privacy reasons.
Sunshine Coast RCMP, which arrived on scene after the attack, reported the two dogs were being walked separately on a field when the bull terrier grabbed the Shih Tzu-poodle by the neck and shook him.
By May 4 the bull terrier was declared dangerous by the town and an investigation was underway.
Fatal dog attacks have been relatively rare on the Sunshine Coast. In 2013, a Pomeranian died of injuries following an attack by a dog in the off-leash Kinnikinnick trails in Sechelt.
