After almost four months of being held without charges in a Cuban jail, Richard Brotherston is coming home.

The Sechelt resident's family got a message from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade [DFAIT] on Monday (April 19) with the news they'd been waiting to hear since December.

"We got the good news. He got released. I was just out getting a ticket. He's at immigration right now, waiting," said Brotherston's mother Helen. "It's great. We're excited. We're happy."At the request of DFAIT staff, Helen purchased a ticket for Brotherston's trip home. She said she expects him back in Vancouver by Tuesday night (April 20).

Cuban police arrested Brotherston after he hit a police officer while in a Havana hospital though witness have said he was drugged before the incident just after Christmas. He had been held in a prison for tourists outside Havana while waiting to see if he would be charged.
