Scammers continue to find innovative ways to take money from kind-hearted people who believe they’re helping a family member. RCMP want to remind anyone who receives a text or phone call from someone purporting to be a family member, and asking for money, to double check before sending it.

Scam

On Jan. 14, a Roberts Creek resident called police to report being scammed of $2,350. The resident reported she received a text message from someone purporting to be her son, claiming he had dropped his phone in water and it wasn't working.

The scammer asked to be e-transferred money to purchase a new phone.  After sending two e-transfers, the victim became suspicious and called her son on his phone and confirmed that it was not damaged and he had not asked for money. This is a common scam that has victimized many people. The RCMP ask that if you receive this type of request you confirm the identity of the caller prior to sending any money.

Hit and run

On Jan. 11 at 12:20 p.m., police and paramedics responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on the Sunshine Coast Highway near Byng Road in Roberts Creek. A red Chevrolet collided with a grey Toyota Yaris after the Yaris veered into oncoming traffic.

The Chevrolet driver was transported to hospital and the Yaris driver left the scene prior to police attending. Anyone who witnessed this incident and who has not already spoken with police, is asked to contact the Sunshine Coast RCMP at 604-885-2266: file 2025-244.

Found property

Tool case

On Jan. 14, a Sechelt resident turned in a suitcase-style Mastercraft case full of tools and other items, which was found in the bushes in downtown Sechelt. If you have lost or had an item like this stolen, contact the Sunshine Coast RCMP and provide a description of a few items inside as they would love to return it to you: file 2025-317.

Red guitar

An RCMP officer on a foot patrol located a red electric guitar off of Wharf Avenue. If anyone is missing a guitar and can provide further identifiers, please call the Sunshine Coast RCMP at 604-885-2266 or attend the Sechelt detachment: file 2025-425.

Prohibited driver

On Jan. 17 in downtown Sechelt, an RCMP officer stopped a male driving a motor vehicle, known to be prohibited from driving. The male attempted to flee from police on foot, but was arrested and taken into custody.  A significant amount of cash along with drug paraphernalia was seized from the man. The RCMP are continuing their investigation and will recommend charges.

Counterfeit money

On Jan. 21, police received a report that a man tried to pass a counterfeit Canadian $20 bill at a gas station in Gibsons. The store clerk determined it was fake and held it for police. All retailers should be wary of bills that look and feel different.
