School District No. 46 (SD46) is looking at a new bottled water policy.

At the March 8 board meeting, trustees discussed a motion brought forward by trustee Jason Scott. Scott requested that staff, through the policy committee, review the usage of bottled water by SD46, with the intent of reducing or eliminating bottled water purchased by the district. His rationale was simple: save money and the planet.

Trustees approved the motion and will await a further staff report.

Therapy services

The district therapy services team made a presentation outlining the work the team does within the school system.

The team of four includes a speech language pathologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and an assistant therapist.

Janet Stevens, speech language pathologist, spoke on behalf of the team, explaining the roles of each member, how they tend to the needs of children and how their team is unique by employing an occupational therapist and physiotherapist directly rather than contracting out.

"We have a hands-on approach where we're in and out of the classrooms," Stevens said. "When there's a critical situation where a child is at risk, we're able to be right there as a whole team."

Award

SD46 chair Silas White announced the launch of the Frances Fleming Award for inspirational achievement. The annual award will honour either an individual or a group in the school district who inspires achievement in the school community.

The award is named after Frances Fleming, a former principal at Pender Harbour Secondary School and long-time Sechelt resident. Fleming was recognized with an Order of B.C. Award in 1997 for her contributions to education. She was the first female superintendent of a B.C. school district. Fleming, who died in 2004, remains an inspiration to the community and education system.
