Daniel Johnson is free on $2,500 bail after being arrested for allegedly trafficking cocaine in a downtown Sechelt park July 9.

According to Const. Andy Cook of the Sunshine Coast RCMP, the 28-year-old Johnson "is well known to police for involvement in drug offences."

In a press release, Cook said Johnson ran from police in Hackett Park but was caught after a short foot chase.

"Individually packaged pieces of crack cocaine and money were seized," said Cook.

Johnson was charged with possessing crack cocaine for the purposes of trafficking and spent two nights in jail.

At a bail hearing on Monday, July 11, Judge Dan Moon decided to release Johnson.

Moon ordered Johnson to obey a curfew between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., not to possess controlled substances, and not to have any contact with a witness to the events in the park.

"If you breach any terms, you almost certainly will be detained," Moon warned Johnson.

As is typical for bail hearings, Moon banned publication of the evidence presented at the hearing.

Johnson was already on bail for two other charges of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. And in B.C. Supreme Court last month, Johnson and his associate Dusty Dickeson both pleaded guilty to possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and were sentenced to two years' probation. Those weapons convictions were related to a shooting in downtown Sechelt in 2004.
