An arrest warrant has been issued relating to a fatal crash on the Sunshine Coast three-and-a-half years ago.
Logan Vincent, aged 30, was the driver of a Pontiac Firebird, which veered off Hwy. 101 at Roberts Creek in September 2000. The incident killed Vincent's passenger, 22-year-old Jeff Meyer.
Meyer, a friend of Vincent, died at the scene of multiple trauma. Vincent was cut from the wreckage, suffering a broken shoulder blade.
According to a police statement issued at the time, the Firebird was believed to have been travelling south when Vincent lost control after passing another vehicle at high speed on a solid line around a curve. He is believed to have pulled back sharply into his own lane to avoid an on-coming vehicle and skidded off the road. The Firebird sheared off a power pole and hit a roadside tree.
Vincent, who had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and failure or refusal to provide a sample, was due to be sentenced in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, on Thursday, April 15, however, he failed to appear.
Defence lawyer Joe Doyle stated that his client had failed to appear in regard to another matter earlier in the month.
"Mr. Vincent had a matter I was not involved with when he did not appear on April 6 in New Westminster," stated Doyle. "I'm not sure if the warrant [for this] is in the system."
Crown lawyer Mike Luchenko asked for an arrest warrant to be issued, with a date to be fixed at which the sentencing would go ahead - with or without Vincent.
Madame Justice Marvyn Koenigsberg issued an arrest warrant, and set the date for the next hearing as May 14.
"The issue of whether sentencing goes ahead on May 14 will be decided on May 14," she said.
