Anti-fracking demonstration held at MLA Nicholas Simons' Sechelt office

The demonstration was part of a series of protests Dogwood and Frack Free BC organized at MLA offices in B.C. last week to advocate for the industry’s phase out and raise awareness of its ill effects.

A dozen people gathered on the step of Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons’ office to protest against fracking expansion in B.C. on July 23.

The demonstration was part of a series of rallies Dogwood and Frack Free BC organized at MLA offices in B.C. last week to advocate for the industry’s phase out and to raise awareness of the industry's ill effects.

“Canada is in the midst of the worst wildfire season in history, and the world just experienced the hottest week ever recorded. Every alarm bell is sounding – but the B.C. government is continuing to expand the very industry that’s fuelling climate disasters,” Alexandra Woodsworth director of organizing with Dogwood and a Coast resident said in a subsequent press release. “Our MLAs need to pick a side: global oil and gas companies raking in record profits, or the people of B.C. trying to stay safe and healthy in the face of climate breakdown.”

Organizers are calling on B.C. to set a date for ending issuing fracking permits, start phasing out the existing industry and support the transition more sustainable industries.
