An unremarkable quarter for crime in Gibsons: Q4 report

Over the entire year in Gibsons, there were 1,416 calls for RCMP service.

From a police perspective, there was “nothing Earth-shattering,” in the last quarter of 2024 in Gibsons, according to Sunshine Coast RCMP Sgt. Don Newman, with no notable increases or decreases. 

“Hopefully people have noticed an increase in visibility in the Town of Gibsons,” Newman told a Jan. 21 Gibsons committee of the whole, noting they’ve increased bike patrols in the town. 

According to police statistics, over the entire year in Gibsons, there were 1,416 calls for service, including 38 for assault, eight for auto theft, six for residential break and enter, 36 for fraud, 34 for mischief to property, zero for theft over $5,000 (other than auto and bike), but 28 for theft under $5,000.

There were 114 calls for service for suspicious person/vehicle occurrence, 99 check wellbeing, 109 mental health flag calls and 16 domestic violence flag calls. 

There were 15 calls for collisions and 36 impaired operation of motor vehicle calls over the course of the year. 

The report also said all civilian and police positions are filled with the detachment welcoming Cst. Kim Tjorham from Coquitlam RCMP as well as Cst. Rona Capangpangan and Cst. Nipun Chadha who both recently completed training.

Also provided were the Sunshine Coast-wide calls for service statistics, which numbered 9,885 in 2024.
