Cadets from the local Air Cadet squadron recently took a trip to Abbotsford to put their skills into practice at the annual gliding event.
Cadets travelled to the event May 2 where everyone got a chance to try gliding in air cadet gliders.
The gliding program has been teaching cadets to fly for about 30 years and is one of the many perks of enrolling in air cadets, according to local captain Rob Waldie.
"One of our aims is to have every one of our cadets have the chance to fly in a glider during their time in the corps," said Waldie.Other aims of the 858 Skookumchuck Air Cadet squadron include instilling leadership and citizenship in their cadets, teaching them drill, range and wilderness survival, as well as teaching them aviation concepts.
"Cadets also get to participate in summer camps, sports nights and sports, drill and range competitions with other corps," said Waldie.
The air cadet program is geared for youth aged 12 to 18 and is free to take part in.
"The uniforms, exercises and trips are all paid for, but sometimes we do some fundraising to help cover costs," said Waldie.
The local corps parades Wednesday nights at Davis Bay Elementary and hold sports nights every couple of months. Their year-end ceremony is scheduled for May 30 at the Elphinstone Secondary School gym. They will be starting back up in September.
